GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Provide individual academic and career advising to career program students during the Spring 2017 semester. The Academic/Career Advisor will utilize proactive advising and other student success strategies to develop and maintain a strong support system for program students.  This is a part-time position in the Perkins Programs which includes the Coaches & Mentors, CVTE Linkage, and Nontraditional by Gender Programs.
 
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
 
1.Provide extensive and proactive individual academic advising to a minimum of 40 special population students. 
2.Communicate regularly with advisees via email, phone and in individual meetings. 
3.Assist students in planning their programs and in the selection of their courses based on their career objectives, skill assessment results and degree requirements.  Monitor academic progress and other academic/personal factors disclosed by the student.
4.Assist and counsel students with educational and career concerns including the administration of the Strong Interest Inventory when necessary. 
5.Follow up with students and faculty on Starfish Early Alert warnings. 
6.Record all advising sessions.  
7.Plan one or two workshops per semester on career related topics.
8.Coordinate annual Graduate Survey in cooperation with the Office of Institutional Research.
9.Refer students to additional academic support services, such as the O’Neill Center for Disability Services, the Tutoring Center when appropriate.
10.Advocate for students, when appropriate, with faculty and other campus offices.
11.Assist students by collaborating with a variety of campus resources with College Admissions (Pathways Program), career services, transfer, registration and financial aid personnel.
12.Assist the Special Program Coordinator with student recruitment and the program intake process.
13.Provide support and information to students enrolled in career programs nontraditional to their gender.
14.Design publications and marketing material that spread the message of value of gender diversity in the workplace.
15.Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 
1.Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, education, social work or closely related field. 
2.Experience as an academic advisor at an institution of higher learning. 
3.Knowledge of academic counseling principles, policies and practices especially as they apply to higher education. 
4.Demonstrated knowledge and experience in utilizing retention strategies for student success. 
5.Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.
6.Ability to work well with diverse populations.
7.Strong oral and written communication skills.
8.Excellent technology skills. 
 
ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
 
1.Experience working with multicultural students.
2.Bilingual.
3.Excellent problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
 
COMPENSATION:  $27.60 per hour, up to 18 hours per week.  Part-time, non-benefited; Grant-funded.  (January – May).  MCCC Unit position.
