Job Details

To ensure clean orderly and attractive conditions of the facility must direct an institutional housekeeping and laundry program
  • Plans, develops, organizes, implements, evaluates and directs the housekeeping/laundry department, its programs and activities.
  • Establishes standards and procedures for work of housekeeping and laundry staff to plan work schedules to ensure adequate service.
  • Evaluates physical condition of establishment, and presents to higher management and maintenance department recommendations for painting, repairs, furnishings, relocation of equipment, and reallocation of space.
  • Periodically inventories supplies, equipment and linen supplies and equipment.
  • Reads trade journals to keep informed of new and improved cleaning methods, products, supplies, and equipment.
  • Assists the Infection Control Coordinator and/or Committee in identifying, evaluating, and classifying routine and job related functions to ensure that housekeeping/laundry tasks involving potential exposure to blood/body fluids are properly identified and recorded.Evaluates and implements recommendations from established committees (i.e., Infection Control, Safety, QA, etc.).
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule department work hours, monitor absenteeism, counsel / discipline, evaluate, check competency, and terminate housekeeping / laundry staff as requested or necessary; complying with all state and federal regulations.
  • Makes daily rounds to ensure that housekeeping / Laundry personnel are performing required duties and to assure that appropriate housekeeping / Laundry procedures are being rendered to meet the needs of the facility.
  • Organizes and directs departmental training programs, resolves personnel problems, hires new employees, and evaluates employees’ performance and working relationship.
  • Maintains records and prepares periodic activity and personnel reports for review by management.
  • Coordinates activities with those of other departments.
  • Assist in preparing and planning the housekeeping/laundry department’s budget and submit to the Administrator for review, recommendations, and approval.
  • May select and purchase new furnishings.
  • May evaluate records to forecast department personnel requirements, and to prepare budget.
  • May perform cleaning / laundry duties in cases of emergency or staff shortage.
  • Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interests and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the facility.
  • Adheres to all safety and sanitation regulations / guidelines for a long term care facility.
  • Ensures that all personnel performing tasks that involve potential exposure to blood, body fluids, or hazardous chemicals participate in appropriate in-service training programs prior to performing such tasks.
  • Must maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information including protected health information. Report known or suspected incidents of unauthorized disclosure of such information; and adhere to Resident’s rights.
  • Ensure the resident’s personal and property rights are followed by housekeeping / laundry personnel at all times.
  • Performs other work related duties as requested.

  • Must possess, as a minimum, a 12th grade education or its equivalent.
  • Must have, as a minimum, 2 ½ years experience in a supervisory capacity in a hospital or other related medical facility.
  • Training in environmental control practices and procedures preferred, but not required.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
  • Must be knowledgeable of housekeeping/laundry practices and procedures as well as the laws, regulations and guidelines governing housekeeping/laundry functions in the nursing care facility.
  • Must possess leadership ability and willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
  • Must have the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies, procedures, etc., of the Housekeeping/Laundry Department.
  • Must maintain the care and use of supplies, equipment, etc., the appearance of housekeeping/laundry areas, and must perform regular inspections of resident rooms/units for sanitation, order, safety and proper performance of assigned duties.
  • Must have patience, tact, a cheerful disposition, and enthusiasm, as well as be willing to handle residents based on whatever maturity level at which they are currently functioning.
  • Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing housekeeping/laundry practices.
  • Must have the ability to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and meet all other Physical and Sensory requirements of the job.
