These positions are Full-Time temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement may be eligible for rehire in subsequent service years provided the employee does not exceed 1039 hours of work in their service year.

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Cape Cod National Seashore is June - September, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: June 2018

CUT-OFF DATES: Applications received by the first cutoff date of March 23, 2018 will be reviewed, rated, and/or referred to the selecting official. Subsequent cut-off date will be: April 20, 2018. Best Qualified applicant resumes received by each cut-off will be referred to the selecting official.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Serves as an ocean lifeguard at one of six protected Seashore beaches. Responsible for public safety, water oriented assists and rescues, enforces beach regulations, administers first aid, as well as providing informational services and interpretation to visitors. May assist with conservation and park protection programs, particularly during periods of inclement weather. Lifeguards must pass a preseason run/swim test. Required to be able to work outdoors for long periods of time. Position is for 11 weeks during the summer months.

Conditions of Employment

  • Lifeguard certificaion from a national recognized organization requried prior to entry on duty.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications required prior to entry on duty.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirements for males.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • Valid state driver's license required.
  • Required to work weekends and holidays.


EXPERIENCE: : 6 months of general experience AND 6 months of specialized experience. You must include mm/yy beginning and ending dates and hours worked per week for each period of employment or volunteer service.

General Experience is any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Examples of general experience would be working as a lifeguard at a YMCA, counselor at a summer camp, work as a leader with Boy Scout/Girl Scout clubs.
